In the beginning, when the first humans were placed in the Garden of Eden, there was no such thing as death. Everything on earth was without blemish, perfect, and full of life. But It was due to Adam and Eve's fall that death entered into the world, "for the wages of sin is death"  (Romans 6:23). However, not only was death introduced as a curse, but as it says in Genesis 3:17, the ground was cursed as a result of sin as well. Think about it. What are some lines of evidence today that show that the ground has been cursed? The dead plants and trees, poisonous fungi in the forest, and the thorns on the bushes all point to things that ought not to be. What would be the reason for creating such things? God surely could not be the author of such things, for many of these things only cause pain and death; it is because of sin that thorns came into existence.

Now let's take a look at the time of our Saviour's death on Calvary. Mocking Him, the Roman soldiers crown Him "King of the Jews." As a form of mockery Jesus was clothed with a "royal" purple robe and was crowned with a crown of thorns. Why did Jesus come to earth? He came to bear our sins so that "whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life" John 3:16. What symbolism! These thorns represent sin and it was a crown of thorns that our Saviour wore when dying on the cross for us! He came, that He could bear the thorns of the curse that cause suffering in our lives! The crucifixion of Jesus shows us the reason for his death; from the thorns in the beginning, to the crown on His head, to the hope of a land where "there shall be no more curse." Some food for thought...
