Jesus taught us how to pray, “Our Father, which art in heaven…”(Matthew 6:9-13). We often call God our Father, for the Bible says that we are His children. However, have you ever considered the significance of calling God our Father? Perhaps Christ, in teaching His disciples to pray, was teaching them how to personally talk with God. The title of ‘Father’ is tied in with some of the dearest associations of the human heart. You see, it is so that we can come closer to and more fully trust God that Christ teaches us to call God Father.

It is a privilege to call the God Almighty our Father, for it is a sign of our love and trust toward Him and a pledge of His regard and relationship to us. Isn’t it true that we love and trust our own earthly fathers in a special relationship that only he can fulfill? The same principle applies to God.

God is yearning for His children to come home to Him like in the parable of the prodigal son. (Luke 15:11-31) He is watching for us every day and the invitation is always there to draw near to Him. Parents love their children with a love that cannot be explained with words. How much more infinite is God’s love then for us, if the Bible says in 1 John 4:8 that “…God is love.”? God is always looking out the window for you with His arms open wide ready to receive you. He is more than ready to bestow all His blessings to you. All we must do is decide to run home to give the Father our poor, sinful hearts to cleanse. No matter where you are, He is willing to be with you. Are you willing to be with him, even though you may be, like the prodigal, "a great way off"? Are you willing to call Him "my Father" today?
